My sister personally knows one of the families that was directly affected by this violent attack and if I’m understanding correctly, their son was shot in the arm and will be okay. As it stands this morning, there are three dead, including the 15 year old female shooter, and multiple others injured. That “it will never happen here” bubble has been forever broken. Our Madison area community is in mourning. This is a terrible tragedy for everyone directly or indirectly involved. The real world possibility of post-traumatic stress problems arising with those that were directly and indirectly involved with this needs to be addressed immediately, don’t wait, get help now!
After the Abundant Life Christian School shooting in Madison, WI yesterday, I’m asking the same question that many people are still asking…
Why?
Why would a 15 year old female choose to obtain a 9mm pistol, take it to school, and open fire on fellow students and teacher in a study hall and then shoot herself? As it stands this morning, there are three dead, including the young female shooter, and multiple others injured.
What drives these people to resort to this kind of action? There must be a lot of outward hate for others, fear of others, coupled with a personal feeling that they no longer have anything to live for. All this has apparently been hiding behind a false facade and unnoticed by those around them. Then something triggers them to plan and follow through with a deadly violent attack on others and themself.
How many times have things like this happened and then hindsight kicks in and those around the shooter recognize signs of a serious problem that they should have paid more attention to?
Of course there will be those out there that will choose to blame the gun, as if the gun is the root cause of violence when actually the gun is not the root cause it’s simply the tool, the psyche of the shooter is the root cause. Violence is not caused by the tools violent people use, violence is caused by the human psyche. Violence simply cannot happen without a human being first making a choice, even if that choice boils down to a pure survival fight or flight choice, it’s still a choice.
There are hundreds of millions of firearms in the USA and, using 2016 statistics, the percentage of those firearms that are criminally misused is so small that it’s statistically indistinguishable from zero! The facts rooted in the statistics are absolutely undeniable, 99.999852% of all firearms in the United States are not criminally misused, that means that 0.000148% of firearms are criminally misused and yes rounded to three decimal places (0.000) that’s statistically indistinguishable from zero! The overall number of firearms in the USA has rapidly increased since those 2016 statistics came out, so those percentages have certainly changed some. Here is an undisputed firearm fact; those hundreds of millions of firearms in the USA have not CAUSED any human being to choose violence.
We need to focus on the root causes of this kind of violence. We have people out there with serious mental health issues, real or delusional fear issues, and self-worth issues that are not being properly recognized, diagnosed, or treated. Until actual root causes are properly dealt with, these violent outbursts are going to continue and banning the tools violent people use in their violent outbursts will do nothing to stop the root causes of violence.
Don’t let hysterical emotions and propaganda control your thinking, think critically and focus on the root causes.
